PR and Communications Specialist

Drumbeat · Auckland · Full-time · Permanent

Drumbeat is an AI-native PR and communications platform for high-growth companies. Customers use Drumbeat to build credible narratives, match stories to journalists, run campaigns, and track coverage, keeping their brand consistently in front of the right audience.

We're pre-seed, two months post-launch, with early customers and real revenue. Built inside New & Improved, the Auckland venture studio behind Tracksuit, Ideally and Aether.

The role

You'll be the face of Drumbeat for the customers you look after, the person who turns the platform into real coverage and gives our customers the PR capacity they don't have in-house.

It's a PR and communications role with a difference. You'll own a portfolio of Drumbeat customers and help them get the most out of the platform, helping them write pitches when they need it, coaching them when they're learning, spotting opportunities they can't see, sharpening the work before it goes out, and standing alongside them from first pitch through to coverage.

Every customer comes to Drumbeat with their own goals, and your job is to use your craft to help them get there.

What you'll do

  • Write pitches, releases, and customer-facing content that's ready to send.

  • Coach customers on what makes a pitch land, what makes a story newsworthy, and when to hold and when to send.

  • Review customer narratives, releases, and content. Lift the quality, sharpen the angle, push back when something isn't ready.

  • Spot story opportunities customers can't see themselves and bring them forward.

  • Pitch directly when a customer needs you to, especially in the early days of their time with Drumbeat.

  • Plan media releases and content calendars alongside customers and their teams.

  • Feed everything you're learning back into the product. The things you do manually today are the things we'll build into Drumbeat tomorrow.

What you'll bring

  • Genuine media pitching experience. You've built your own journalist relationships and personally pitched stories, not just briefed agencies or signed off on someone else's work.

  • A PR agency or in-house comms background where you were the practitioner, not the manager.

  • Global media experience. You've placed stories beyond NZ.

  • A coaching instinct. You can teach a founder to write a pitch, not just write it for them.

  • A point of view on what makes a story work, and the judgement to know when something isn't ready.

  • Comfort with ambiguity and a bias to ship, even when the brief isn't fully formed.

Nice to have

  • Experience working with high-growth startups or scale-ups as clients or customers.

  • Tech, SaaS, consumer brand, or B2B media backgrounds.

  • Existing journalist relationships in NZ, AU, UK or US tech and business media.

What we offer

  • Compensation: NZ$120,000 to NZ$130,000, depending on experience.

  • A permanent role in a core function, with room to grow as Drumbeat scales.

  • Working environment: Auckland-based, in-person where the work calls for it, with direct access to the founding team and our customers.

  • Tools: You'll be using Drumbeat daily and shaping how it evolves.

  • Studio backing: Operator network and support from New & Improved (Tracksuit, Ideally, Aether).

This is a permanent, high-impact role and a core part of how Drumbeat works. It's the seat where our customers' success is won or lost, and we're hiring for it now. We hire for what you can build, not where you've built it. If this caught your eye, we'd love to hear from you, even if you don't tick every box.

If this sounds like you, apply today. If you would like to find out more, get in touch with us at careers@drumbeathq.com.
